Tomorrow Water, BKT’s U.S. affiliate, was honored at WEFTEC 2024 for its Mainstream AMX research, selected as a Top 10 Innovation Paper by BlueTech Research.

Tomorrow Water, BKT’s U.S. affiliate, has been honored with the selection of its Mainstream AMX research paper as one of the “Top 50 Innovation Papers” at WEFTEC 2024. BlueTech Research, the official innovation partner of WEFTEC, annually recognizes 50 outstanding papers that showcase global innovation in water and wastewater technology. This year, the paper titled “A New Strategy to Control NOB in the Mainstream Anammox Process using Centrate from Anaerobic Digester” was selected among the Top 10 Technology Supplier Papers.
This marks another prestigious milestone for BKT. At WEFTEC 2023, the company’s Co-Flow paper—demonstrating energy savings through the integration of wastewater treatment and data centers—was also selected among the Top 10. In 2020, BKT’s Proteus+ field validation paper received similar recognition, attracting strong interest from global water professionals.
Tomorrow Water has been developing the Mainstream AMX process since 2021 at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Los Angeles, in partnership with the City of Los Angeles and Black & Veatch. The technology has shown promising results and was presented at six major international events in 2024 alone, including Singapore International Water Week.
Looking ahead, BKT and Tomorrow Water aim to prioritize commercialization of the Mainstream AMX process in equatorial developing countries, where high year-round temperatures create ideal conditions for microbial activity. While no country has yet achieved full-scale commercialization of Mainstream AMX, this breakthrough technology is expected to significantly reduce costs and accelerate sanitation infrastructure in the Global South.
About AMX Technology
AMX is an advanced biological nitrogen removal process that enables energy self-sufficiency in wastewater treatment. It reduces aeration energy consumption by up to 60% and eliminates the need for external carbon sources. Due to the temperature sensitivity of anammox bacteria, AMX has traditionally been applied in sidestream treatment using centrate from anaerobic digesters. In 2023, BKT successfully achieved Korea’s first sidestream AMX commercialization at the Noksan Wastewater Treatment Plant in Busan.
